Partition Saga

Partition Saga

The partition of the Punjab in mid August 1947 took place as part of a negotiated solution brokered by the British between the Indian National Congress, the All India Muslim League and the Sikhs of Punjab to partition India and transfer power to India and Pakistan. The principle on which India and the Punjab were split is that Muslim majority areas were split from the rest of India and given to Pakistan. The need to partition India was made by the primary communal party of the Muslims, the All India Muslim League. It insisted a different state by virtue of their Islam faith and culture.

On June 3, 1947, the Partition Plan was declared which demanded the Punjab and Bengal assemblies to vote on if they wanted to maintain their states united or partitioned. The assemblies voted in favor of partitioning their provinces. Annually, Islam Republic of Pakistan celebrates its Independence Day on fourteenth August and India on August 15, so the typical myth among people is the fact that firstly, the partition of Hindustan took place and after that both the countries got freedom. Everything that happened in 1947 was completely opposite. The states first attained freedom almost 350 years of British rule and two days after, the partition took place.

It's scarcely known fact that the person who'd been behind India's partition had never seen the nation. Let us go back to the flashback, 68 years ago, when the historical choice was drawn in Delhi. Even when Pakistan and India attained independence, till Aug 17, there is no statement on the border between two countries. The man who set the boundary lines for India and Pakistan was Cyril John Radcliffe, the British attorney and Law Lord. Radcliffe was given the challenging task of the presidency of the two boundary committees of drawing the edges for the new countries of Pakistan and India, in a manner that would leave as numerous Hindus and Sikhs in India and Muslims in Pakistan as possible.

On Aug 17, 1947, the Radcliffe Line was officially announced as the line between India and Pakistan, two days after the Partition of India. British government had given the liability of dividing Punjab and Bengal province between the Union of India and Dominion of Pakistan to Sir John Radcliffe. He was commissioned to equitably divide 4, 50, 000 km sq of territory with 88 million people. The estimated loss of life throughout the partition of India is 1 million.
