Can 'Human Entity' Put an End to River's Ordeal?

The two holy rivers of India, Ganga and Yamuna, have reportedly received the status of human entity after an order issued by the Uttarakhand high court. As the rivers are not real entities, advocates appointed by the court will handle their cases on behalf of them as managers, as happens in case of minors. That will make the pleas against pollution and manhandling of rivers even stronger than before.

However, we all know the complications of legal battles and the long time consumed by the process. So, there can be no substitute to people’s awareness, which can be only attained by rigorous campaigning. So far this is a good legal move, but parallel campaigning will be equally needed to fight the battle against river pollution. The age-old practices of bathing in the rivers, dumping wastes and idols cannot be stopped by force; rather it will need to invoke love for the rivers among the common people, while presently they just worship them.
