Why Cow Vigilance: Supreme Court has Asked for an Answer

Congress leaders Shehzad Poonawala and Tehseen have filed a petition with the Supreme Court, the highest judicial body of the country, against the growing number of murders and violence by the cow vigilant groups. They claim that the self-appointed cow protector groups should be immediately banned and declared illegal. As a result the Supreme Court has asked the Bharatiya Janata Party for explanation on why these groups will be allowed to rule; the court has given an ultimatum of three weeks to submit the answer.

Five states ruled by BJP—Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Maharashtra and Rajasthan—and also Congress ruled Andhra—have been asked to clarify their stand in the matter of cow vigilance. The National Human Rights Commission has also taken their action; it has issued a notice to the Rajasthan government for the lynching of a man by the cow protectors.
