Another woman is burnt with acid by her in-laws in UP, with narrow chances for survival. Sangeeta Verma, now fighting for her life in Safdurjung hospital, repeatedly told her family about her marital woes but nobody lent an ear. And Saangeeta was no poor uneducated woman; she was a government school teacher. Her husband and in-laws demanded an amount of 25 lakhs.
There are multiple laws in the country to save the women; but who will apply those laws? If educated working women like Sangeeta cannot get the support of their families, what can be expected in case of the poor unprivileged women?
Sangeeta says that her father was afraid of the society; it happens always. A father is afraid of the society but not afraid of his daughter’s death. A father can hear that somebody has beaten up his daughter but stays silent. And what is that society which does not criticize a man and his family for torturing a woman, but can criticize a woman for taking divorce?
We cannot blame the law or the government unless we change ourselves. If we stay silent in the face of crime, the criminals will get utmost liberty to do anything, even murder a woman.
