India's Olympics Performance

India's Olympics Performance

Sakshi Malik from Haryana won the bronze medal in females wrestling and was given the honor of being the flag bearer at the closing ceremony. P.V. Sindhu from Hyderabad won a silver in badminton, missing the top honor after a great fight. Gymnast Dipa Karmakar from Tripura did everybody proud when she reached within touching distance of the bronze, coming 4th in the vault event. Another heartbreak was Aditi Ashok, who revealed a rare patch of splendor in the first two days of golf. Despite the fact that the 18 year old Bengaluru golfer was roundly respected and recommended for her determination and play she was not able to grasp a medal.

Lalita Babar from Maharashtra has his career best in 3000m steeplechase, came 10th, improving her national record by 3 seconds. The men disappointed in nearly anything they touched. Gold medallist Abhinav Bindra saw the bronze slip from his hand at the last moment in a shoot out. Sports need constant support from school to Olympic games which is patchy in India, at best. A little bit of ignominy was added to the close medal drought when wrestler Narsingh Yadav was disqualified from Olympic games after World Anti Doping Agency went on to appeal at the last moment against National Anti Doping Agency clean chit to him.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport sat in Rio slapped a 4 year ban on Narsingh  before his scheduled round, ignoring the conspiracy angle in the anti-doping test failure. Jitu Rai belied the hopes of many authorities to get a medal when he ended up 8th in 10m air pistol final after playing exceptionally through the qualifying round. Then he crashed out of 50m air pistol, possibly misjudging the wind in the last few shots. Gurmeet Singh showed a little of spirit in the 25m rapid fire pistol event, but ultimately was left out. Mairaj Ahmad Khan ended ninth in men's skeet event after missing 3 shots in the final round in a shoot out. At the rarefied atmosphere of medal contenders, errors aren't tolerated. Indian boxers also crashed out of Olympic games with Vikas Krishan took an important pound from his Uzbek opponent in the 75kg bout.

There are more losers than winners.
